Got a call from Texag93 on Tuesday evening about heading to his lease and doing a little turkey hunting. My schedule was a little full but I was able to move things around and had some help from Jaspro. Thanks Jaspro for coming over to my house Friday AM and supervising the Tree trimmers.
I left Dallas at 3:00 on Thursday. Traffic sucked and 287 was closed for a while because of the wild fires. High winds made for a tough drive. I arrived at camp about 30 min after Jason did. We took off in his truck to find some birds for the morning hunt. We watched as about 50 birds started to roost in 2 big cottonwood trees... We knew it was going to be a good weekend.
Friday AM came and we headed out for the hunt. But we did not hunt the roost of the 50 birds. Jason wanted to hunt another spot and leave these birds for later.... Well we pushed 8 birds off their roost walking in to where we were going to set up.... we set up and called for a while but nothing....
We went and got the card out of his camera at his feeder to see what was showing up... turkeys, turkeys and more turkeys...... 3 times a day, roughly 7:30, 2:30 and 6:30........ we made a game plan..
As we left to head to the blind at 11:45. we spot a bobcat on the side of the road..... Jason takes very close aim with his coyote killing machine (AR-15) and missed... The cat jumped and tuned 180 deg. He had no idea what was going on and tuned back around and started to eat again. Picking up whatever he was eating he turned around and started to cross the road to head into the trees…. Again Jason missed!!! We drove down to where the cat crossed the road and we could not see him… Jason saw something odd at the base of some trees. The cat was laying there looking at us from about 20 yard…. Was Jason going to strike out on his third shot…. Boom and it was a home run…. Dead kitty!!
We were off again to sit in the blind for the rest of the day. We had camera, chairs, bow and the “White Trash… Bag Cooler” .. getting the decoys set up, placing chairs so I had a clear shot… opening a cold beer and relaxing….. Well after a couple hrs and a few beers, nature was calling and I had to Pee. It was too noisy to unzip the door and all the windows had Velcro netting , so that was out of the question because of the noise. One window behind Jason had no netting on it. We figure unzip it a half way and take care of business out the window of the blind. Jason started to unzip the window a little to look out before opening it the rest of the way… Jason looked right then left and “ Turkeys” is what he saw coming our way… Our chairs were all in the wrong places and my bow was stuffed in the corner. We quickly got things in their places and video camera running. About 10 hens came a running and a lone gobbler was in tow……. I saw he had a good beard.. I hooked up my release and came to full draw. I held for a while because he was facing away with his head down.. I needed a better shot… after 20 seconds or so he turned broadside and I touched the trigger… The arrow hit him square in the body and broke both legs… I take off out of the blind trying to catch him, he flopping and hopping but with no legs he can’t fly….. As I was trying to catch him I accidently stepped on his tail feathers and as he flopped around they pulled out…. It probably would have been a great bird to mount ( my biggest ) but there are more out there and I am sure I will shoot more of them…
He had 3/4 inch Spus and a 10 inch beard
Jason and I were done hunting and just goofed off the rest of the weekend…
We ate good. Rib eye, bake taters, sausage, boudin, beans, biscuit and gravy with sausage and eggs..
Word to the wise….. A sangria hangover is a bad thing!!!!
Thanks Jason for the invite, even though the one you asked before me could not make it and I was the last choice.. Their loss my gain…
