Well a couple of weeks ago, I had the Priveledgeof killing the biggest Axis I'd had ever seen alive, let alone shoot. As I said in that story I had been hunting a stand that we had named the Shark Stand, for a Buck named "Shark", well there has been another piece of the Puzzle lingering around out there in the Mesquite flats..........we call him Split Ear. Split Ear is a big 'Ol Whitetail that just flat out run's everything in the country off......and I mean everything, he's about the only whitetail I have ever seen that stare's down Big Axis deer......and they leave! Well again this story begins from last year, when me, and a few other TBH'ers had run in's with him not far from this stand, but last year he was a 10 point, with horns that looked like he had run straight into a cinder block wall (They lay back)!
Well fast forward to this year and 'ol split ear had grown to super big body porportions, but lost tines, he turned into an 8 with a Bad Attitude (Somthing with turning off the Protein in late September I think
) Well with my search for Shark, wouldn't you know it, I had several Trail Cam Pic's of Shark eating Corn after Dark........until Split Ear showed up. Then I received a pic a few weeks back of Split Ear running off Shark(Which I have lost in the Process
), so now Shark goes from an Amusing Deer that I seldom even thought of, too "Hit List" Material, but became as noturnal as Shark all of the Sudden, but I had seen him in daylight, so I knew it could happen any day.
Fast forward to last week, and I became Violently Ill with a Viral Intestanal Infection.........not pretty, and a Hospital Visit to boot. So after a week, I slowly find my way back to the Stand to check the Camera, and wouldn't you know it, Split Ear had been there every night....and Afternoon.
So against my Better judgement (and my Wife's) I slithered back to the stand, I say that because that's how I felt going back to it! LOL! I even took a garbage bag just in case! LOL! Well as I started my less than comfortable sit, in waiting for Split Ear to show, I had several Does, and young Bucks show, with no sign of split ear. So just when I thought I could not take it anymore Iheard brush coming down to my left, I mean he was raking everything in his path, and crashing into everything, almost like he wanted everything in Sutton County to be aware of his Being. Then just about then, he made his appearance, at this point all of that Illness, and feeling bad went out the Window, amazing what that Adrenaline does to the Body! As he Ambeled in, I slowly drew the Katera XL back, then he walked directly under the tree, and started thrashing a china berry tree, next to the oak I was sitting in, but in all of this he presented me a perfect shot, not far below me. So I stood straight up in the stand, but could not turn the right way, my Safty system vest, had me to where I could not draw on that Angle, so I went under the loop that conects to the tree, and Drew again....bent at the Waist.........level my bubble.......float the pin.........pic a spot........WHACK!!! With a dust cloud resembling a Buffalo Herd at full tilt, he was gone.......all I could think was.....MONEY!! I crawled down, walked around a bit but could find no blood??? So I started making big Circles, and sure enough he had run about 100 yards, I got 1 lung, liver, and it exited back a bit. Split Ear Bought the Farm, but it was a Fun hunt, although I was sicker than a Dog.......you should of seen me getting him back to the Truck.
I'm waiting to see what happens now with this area, being so close to the Rut, it should get intresting..........Come on SHARK!!
