shed question

found my first shed this weekend a nice 8 point with a 9 inch g2, how can you tell if it fell off or broke recentley, (it's pretty bleached, so I assume it has been there all summer) and it was in a field. Also is there a cure to stain them? Thinking about making something out of it.

look and see if the pedical is still on the antler. If so then probably a shed
