Split G2
I had only seen him once (for sure) and that was on the walk into the stand in the morning when I shot my 8. Have had hundreds of pictures mainly mornings just not when I was there. Recently only pictures of him at night. So I thought I had missed my opportunity and he's a nocturnal buck. I had set in this same blind on Tuesday afternoon and didn't see anything so hopes weren't very high.
I made it to the lease at 5 after a not so great day at work. Was dressed and in blind by 515. Had a doe and fawn come through at 540ish checking to see if any corn was left. They didn't stay to long. The feeder went off at 6 so I got bow in lap ready for go time. Nothing came except 12 squirrels and 20 dove.
Around 640 I had all but given up on this hunt. So I start texting my dad and sending misty funny pictures and reading the thread on the buck the guy couldn't find. I look up and split g2 is standing on the opposite side of feeder behind cattle panels. I instantly get buck fever. Putting my phone down and being quiet has never been so hard in my entire life. Finally get my phone put down. And hope and pray he decides to come in the pen. He keeps looking to his left and right never looking at me. He takes a couple steps away from the pen then a couple towards. This goes on for what seems like hours but probably 5 minutes at the most.
He finally decides to come in to the pen and he goes to exactly 30 yards and faces me puts his head down and eats some corn. After another couple hours (minutes). He raises his head looks to the right and goes back out of the pen behind a bush. I couldn't see him so I was thinking at least I got to see him and I hope I get to see him again someday.
All of the sudden he comes from behind the bush into the pen. Exactly at 30 yards but this time broadside. I range him to make sure and put the range finder down. When I raise my hand back up my hand is heavy. My release hooked the range finders string. It swings and hits the chair with a earth rumbling noise. I unhook the range finder and look up he's still standing broadside at 30 yds. I grab my bow and hook release. As I start to draw he moves his front leg opening up his vitals. I made sure I had all my anchor points and squeezed the release. It seemed like the arrow took forever to get there panic immediately set in did I look through my peep did I have all of my anchor points? Thwack made a great loud sound and he took off running.
My arrow fell out about 15 yards past the feeder pen. I never heard a crash. So I start calling my dad and telling him I just shot split g2 he wants to come look immediately. I told him I'll sneak out and come to him I want to give him at least a hour before looking. After the long hour of second guessing anything and everything we head back to the feeder pen look at the arrow great blood no gut smell. There's a little blood here and there for about 20 yards then the faucet opened and he was pouring blood all over. Another 20 yards and we find a spot where he layed down with puddles of blood. My heart sank thinking we didn't wait long enough and he's gone forever. My dad shines the flash light around and he's laying not 10 yards away. At this time misty has pulled up so in my excitement I took off towards her so she could share in my excitement of finding split g2.
