I had a similar situation happen to me recently....hit a doe perfectly....but she lived for a lonnnnnng time afterwards.....we brought the dogs out and they found her several hundred yards later and still very alive....thankfully we were able to put her down....still, I made a great shot....great blood for a little while...I still am not exactly sure what happened.....I am very sorry you could not recover your buck.
