    Opening Weekend Hog

This past weekend was really my first chance to hunt this year as I was dedicated to studying for my PE test that was held on Oct. 24, so bow season was out. I did take my daughter out youth weekend but did not connect. Since she couldn't make it me and my dad went to the ranch for opening of rifle season as we have rarely missed an opening together. I wasn't expecting much since I told my daughter no one would shoot a deer until she got a chance. As luck would have it I watched her deer each hunt at 20 yards on Saturday.

Sunday I was expecting the same result except as I walked up to put out my hand corn there was a large hog already at the feeder. Talk about an experience walking up on that in the dark. After our brief standoff I was able to put out my corn and get settled in. Within 10 minutes of sitting in the dark I heard the stampede coming. Pigs came from everywhere around me and began to devour the corn intentionally set out for the deer. At his point all I could make out was black blobs not knowing which end was what and where one pig started and another ended I patiently waited for shooting light hoping they would not vacuum all the corn and move on. Luckily as they finished my hand corn the feeder went of and scattered the mob briefly before they came back for more. By this time I could see well enough to shoot. Bad news for the pigs. The first one that stopped broadside at twenty yards got smacked with the grim reaper. It has been a while since harvesting an animal with my bow so it was nice to hear that solid smack of the arrow penetrating the rib cage.
After the shot everything scattered and my wait began. Not too long after the pigs departure the same deer from Saturday began to stagger in. They hung around until my dad ripped of a round at a group of hogs that came to his feeder. It ended up being a successful weekend with kills for my dad and I as well as patterning the buck I want my daughter to kill. Hopefully I will get to report that after next weekend.
