I have had a lot of luck in the past in Nebraska, so this summer I decided to find a quality outfitter and go back. Quick google search led me to Broken arrow outfitters. They have camps in both Nebraska and Kansas. I sent Denny a email with a 100 questions and he responded right back a couple more phone call and a list of great references and I soon had a deposit on the way.
Broken arrow has over 10 miles of FREE RANGE, continuous platte river bottom, mainly corn and some food plots, they take 2 weeks of bow hunter's, 1 week of rifle hunters, 1 week of muzzle loader hunters. The buck to doe ratio is great I would guess 2-1 and all age brackets of deer, Great midwestern Habitat!
November 8 found me making the 16 hour drive from Texas, I arrived at camp around 9 pm, Met My awesome guide Dave Campbell, got settled and hit the hay. Dave walked me into my stand the 1 st morning and as I was getting ready to climb up he told me they had a picture off game cam 2 day before of a Double Drop tine buck, I was like WHAAAATTTTT? he snickered and headed off. I hunted that day and next all day in that stand and on day three the wind switched from the south so we moved to a new stand closer to the thicket. At 12:15 he walked out at 35 yes in a thicket and I just about fell out of the stand! OMG the mass and drops gave me a bad case of Buck Fever, 24 years of bowhunting, including killing a grizzly with my Bow, I had never shook like that! God I love this sport! I had no shot and only saw him for 3 seconds, but WOW what a encounter I felt like a blessed man to have just seen a animal like that! I decided at that moment it was him and him only I was going to hunt! Go big or go Home! It made my trip just to see him!
Long story short the wind switched that night back to the north and I had to move stand locations I sat every day all day in sub freezing weather as low as 8 degrees and passed 5 bucks from 130-160 in that time period. On last day of the hunt the wind was back from the south and I was headed to the stand in the cedar tree that i had saw him in. I was in the stand and ready by 5 am, it was a windchill of 8 degrees and I just knew the conditions were perfect to maybe see him again. At 850 a doe came crashing thru the woods from the corn field behind me, pushing here were two young bucks and they ran her right underneath my tree. they looked back and I did too and there he was at 21 yards, holy crap!, I grabbed my bow spun around and started to draw, he spotted me and bounded off to the edge of the woods, he stopped and looked back at his doe under my tree, it gave me just enough time to range him at 61 yards, draw my bow and here that sweet THWACK!, I hit him with a Rage hypodermic in last rib and came out opposite side by his opposite shoulder! He ran right by me with blood spraying everywhere and tipped over on the edge of the slough 30 yards in front of me! YESSSSSSS I screamed, looked to the sky and thanked the Good lord above! Called my girlfriend and left a very excited email and text my kids who were in school! They were all so excited and were as tuned as me that a got to shoot him! It took me at least 5 minutes to compose myself and climb down, I walked over to him and almost fell down! he was so huge! No Ground shrinkage here! Dave and the guides got him out and we took pictures, cut him up and scored him. 188 2/8, 26" main beams, 12 and 9" drops and 3 mass measurements over 8" OMG I feel like a blessed man. I can't say enough about Broken arrow outfitters and there guides, food, lodging and hunting was Top shelf. Thank you guys again!
I am going back next year if any of you guys wanna join PM me, its a affordable hunt and I am gonna do a combo Kansas and Nebraska hunt next year. They also took to other buck that week that were in 150 class! Just absolutely great bowhunting area! I feel like one lucky son of a gun! Thanks to all the crew there, my kids, Nate, Blaze and Laney and my Honey Taffi for all there support.
