    Two Arrows, Two Bucks!

Last weekend, I had an opportunity to hunt ranch out in the Uvalde/Montel area. This is a 7000 acre, low fenced ranch with free ranging exotics and whitetails. Call me a fool or nuts…but I opted to bow hunt on this trip so I never took my rifle out of the truck. The guide had told me about a pretty nice 10 pointer and 8 pointer that he had seen on the back side of the ranch so he set up a 12 ft. tripod off into the cedars near game trails and a feeder. By 7 am on Friday morning, I had several deer around me...mostly does, spikes and young 8 pts. bucks. Then it happened! The deer started running off and in comes this nice 8 pointer with pretty good horns. He gives me about 10 seconds to shoot him…but I've got 2 does looking right at me so I couldn't draw my bow to take the shot. CRAP!!! As I'm fussing & cussing to my self (and somewhat regretting my decision not to rifle hunt ...in walks another big buck with 8 pts. And a kicker off of the back side of his main beam. He started chasing does around but made the fatal mistake of stopping 27 yards out into a clearing. I drew the bow and let the Muzzy tipped, Easton ACC arrow fly striking him right behind the shoulder and passing right through him! He whipped around and ran back towards the brush but stopped about 40 yards out and started wobbling. It was "good nite, Irene" as the buck crashed over a mere 45 yards from my shot. He was a 9 pointer aged at 6 years old and scored 125 B&C. He field dressed out at 110 lbs.

Saturday evening found me back in the same blind. Again I had does and spikes around me but no shooters. I sat and watched a nice, young 2.5 year old 8 pt. that was nearly 18" wide with a perfect rack. He will be a good deer in a few years …but not yet. Just as I was about to call it a day…a high-horned, fork-racked 4 pt. buck walked in that had been hurt in a fight as the deer were really rutting out there this weekend. Because he had no brow tines and was a 3 yr. old deer…I decided to take him as we were allowed to shoot a cull buck too. He made his way into one of my shooting lanes and stopped broadsided at 25 yards. Twang! Another Easton arrow cut through his lungs too with him only going 30 yards before falling over. This could not have been a more perfect hunt. As a bow hunter (which all of you are), a guy worries about shooting an animal and having them run off for a long tracking job. This hunt went just like the ones on TV…except, "This wasn't Hollywood!"

This has been an exceptional year for the Davison Boys & Dad…but wait, we've still got a few more weeks so stay tuned….

    Good Hunting to you all.
