This all started by looking on here and seeing that Jerry (Coop) was offering a chance for a veteran to come out to his place and try and shoot a buck. Original thread: http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...d.php?t=405906. I was one of two selected to go on this hunt, and I couldn't have been happier. This would be my first real chance at going after a nice buck.
Myself, and my buddy Jordan (gordyanimal) showed up to Jerry's Thursday afternoon full of excitement. Jerry was there waiting for us at the camp and we hit it off from there. We sat around the camp for two hours talking about hunting, and our experiences overseas. I just have to take a minute and say that Jerry is an amazing individual. He made both of us feel at home and made it very clear that all he cared about was us having a great time, and trying his best to get us a deer. We spent hours around the camp just shooting the breeze, and it made this trip the experience it was. Thank you Jerry for such a great time!
Two hours after we got there, Jerry was taking us to our stands and wishing us luck. I was at the corn feeder stand in a ground blind. It was 17 yards to the feeder and you could see all of the sign around the feeder. To say that I was excited was an understatement. 20 minutes after getting in the stand I heard the familiar blow of a doe and thought I was busted. 5 minutes later and 2 does with fawns came from behind me and stood around the feeder eating the old corn. They kept looking up at the feeder like they were waiting for it to go off. As soon as the feeder went off at 530, the woods came alive and next thing I knew there were 21 deer infront of me. No big bucks, just a nice 4 point and a couple of spikes. I didn't want to shoot a doe because I was waiting for a buck to come out. We didn't kill anything that first night but we were surrounded by deer. When we got back to camp, Jerry had the computer out with the trail camera pictures and I saw that there were 4 bucks coming to the feeder every morning at 740.
The next morning found us in the stand at about 530 just waiting in anticipation. At about 720 I had 2 does infront of the stand just staring at the feeder waiting for it to go off. They walked into the woods and as soon as the feeder went off at 745 they were right under it. At 746 I saw antlers coming into the view of my one open window in the ground blind. My heart instantly started pounding since I saw it was the biggest of the four bucks that were coming in. I tried to calm down and not move since there were 15 other deer around the feeder. I now understand what everyone says about having too many deer around the feeder. I thought I got busted once trying to draw but that doe just slowly walked off. I waited for what I thought was 45 minutes but was really 15 and the buck finally came to the front of the feeder broadside. He moved his closest foot forward and I settled the pin and let the arrow fly. I saw the fletching disappear behind his shoulder and then it was like a stampede of deer leaving. I went nuts when I realized that I just killed my first buck with a bow, and 2nd buck of all time. 30 minutes took FOREVER and I didn't want to ruin Jordans hunt but when I texted him that I shot the buck, he said he was on his way and next thing I know he was running down the road towards the blind. 75 yards later and there he was!!!!!! Took out both lungs and heart with the shuttle t's.
I'll let Jordan tell his story about his deer but I ended up killing a doe this morning. We had a great time and I can't thank Jerry enough for the experience he gave us. He is a great American and I feel very luck for meeting him. Sorry for the long read. God Bless.
