Where to start on this guy? I have some great guys on our lease. The story behind this deer is a first for me. Back in Late October he was coming into my feeder regularly so it was fairly easy to get a shot off on him. When I shot he ducked my arrow and I ended up hitting around 4" over his heart. The minute I let my arrow fly I knew I was in trouble. I gave him about an hour, jumped out of the stand and starting looking for my arrow and blood. I found the arrow right away, covered in bloood. I couldnt find any blood trail to speak of but its about what I expected with how high I hit him. I followed his route he had taken and started to find blood about 75 yds after the shot. It was very spotty and not looking good. After about 150 yds the trail started to turn into real splatter and things were starting to look up. After about 150 more yds. The blood died out altogether. We looked for hours but no luck. I assumed he was probably dead somewhere and I would just have to wait for the birds. Every weekend following that hunt I was out there looking for him. We had trail cams out but no sign what so ever (alive or dead).
Fast forward to last week in December. I got a call from one of the lease members that they were pretty sure they had him on their camera coming to corn. The guys stand that he was coming to told me that since I had already hit him and pursued him so much that he would step aside and let me hunt his stand to go after him, even though he was fully in his right to shoot him (Thanks Wes). Last weekend he came in to corn in the evening. He looked as though he hadnt even been hit and looked very healthy. This time there would be no second chances. Double lunged him and he piled up 25 yds after the shot.
So thankful to be on a lease where the hunters care about one another and look out for the other guy. Also it was really cool to see how tough these animals are.
