The Story.......Finally

Either way heckuva job. Those don't present themselves to often with a stick and string.
Sorry it's taken so long to get the story up, I've been covered up in Turkey Hunters, and finally got some time to post.
During Deer Season I had noticed quite a few Axis Bucks roaming the Ranch, and being Low Fence they come and go when they please, you might not see one for a year or so, they move quite a bit in this part of the Country. Well most of the Bucks I had seen in December were all just starting to grow their Horns, so I gave them the pass, figuring that I would see them in the Spring starting to shed out of the Velvet, or quite possibly not seeing any at all. Fast forward to last month, I was in one of the Draws where I had seen all of the Axis from this past Winter, kind of trying to scout some Roost for Turkeys, when I jumped what seemed to be a Very Nice Axis in full Velvet, but not far away from Shedding all of it. So I start to put a game plan together, and Racking my Brain of how I can beat one of what seems to be an animal that is pretty good at eluding me for the past couple of years. So I decide on a spot that is one of the prettiest spots on the Ranch down in one of the Oak Motts that runs along the Dry Devil's River Bed, and decide to place a pop-up blind inside the Oaks, and do my best at brushing it in as good as possible, and start placing some Alfalfa out, and check on it every few days, to see if they were still in the area. Well as luck would have it, they went through about 2 bales in about 4 days, so I had a pretty good idea what was doing it, seeing as there is not livestock in there, and it seems to take a Whitetail in this part of the country to eat that much hay. So I decide to make a break from the House to the pasture one afternoon, to see whats enjoying all of the Alfalfa. Sure enough about 25 Axis show up(mostly Does, and young bucks)in front of the blind, but out in the middle of the Draw I count 8 Rather Large Axis Bucks feeding together through the Rocks, but as luck would have it, night fall came to soon, and with them never making the move with the rest of the Herd, so I slipped out, and made my way back to the Truck, with a chestshire cat grin on my face, I knew it was just a matter of time.........I just had a funny feeling.
Two Days later I finally get a chance to make my way back to the draw blind, with a really good feeling about the evening, and the Hopes of one of the big boys presenting me with a shot. As I sat for the first few hours I could hear in the distance the Axis making their way to me, with all of the barks of the Axis in the distance, it started to get real close, and I could feel my blood pressure start to rise. Sure enough I spot movement, and see the spots moving through the Trees, to my front at about 40 yards I see the Big Buck waddle towards me head on, with the turning the head sideways to walk through the Trees, I knew he was big, and then to notice he had just about shed all of his velvet(I wanted a hard horned Axis)I could not believe it was finally about to happen! He strolled in and pushed some Turkey, and whitetail out of the way, and presented me with a perfect 23 yard broadside shot. I readied the Hoyt Vectrix XL, settled the 20 yard pin, and sent the G5 Striker on it's way to the Target, he jumped straight into the Air with a Deep, Deep Guteral Moan, and Ran for the Draw, and with one last stride took a Nose dive into the dirt...........and was Dead. The feelings of elation, and relief took their toll on me, I could not have been happier. I've killed alot of smaller ones through the past Deer seasons, as most of you have seen, but this was my Toad of an Axis, and I did it on my Terms, not just by an accidental sighting on one of my Whitetail stands, straight up Axis Hunting. They are truley beautiful animals, and are the best table fare I have tasted in these West Texas Pear Flats. I have really been blessed. He know Resides with Chance Love, where I am sure Chance will keep that Memory alive forever for me.Last edited by Drake; 03-21-2008, 10:12 PM.
