This great buck finally slipped up. He has eluded at least three hunters over the last for years. Two of them rifle hunters and me with the bow. All of us had game cam pics of him each year. He was was a regular in my area all summer long, but disappeared after mid October. Little did I know, he had relocated and was frequenting another area since then. He most certainly became a target buck the second game cam pictures revealed his presence there. Fortunately, he was just as cagy there and thwarted several attempts on his life.
The entire time, about three of were looking for this buck, but only one knew where he was.
Luckily, my UM-562 pegged him just before Christmas. I almost had him on the 26th, but a creaky stand ruined a 25 yard opportunity. On Friday, a brisk NW wind would set the stage for another opportunity. After only 30 minutes on stand, I spotted him and another buck grazing slowly down a trail that would put them inside of 20 yards. At the last moment, they proceeded East and would shortly be in my scent trail. Disaster was imminent, but sadly, they spooked even before reaching my downwind area. I'll never even know why? I was disgusted. As I stood facing South and stressed over the event, I heard steps and noticed a broken up 10 point working is way towards me. He crossed directly through my scent trail and never showed any sign of catching my wind. He provided great entertainment for almost an hour before I noticed foot steps coming from behind me. It was Spooky. He nervously approached a NS went through the entire range of foot stomping, head wiggle, sniff sessions and periodic hops. An injured buck limped in from the West and seamed to draw his attention away from his compulsive behavior. This gave me the opportunity I needed. The trusty EVO found the draw stop, 20 yard pin settled firmly behind the should, level showed perfectly between the lines, pressure built on the release and my Grizz Trick II was on the way. The green Nocturnal disappeared about one inch high right of my mark, but still looked great. After 20 minutes, I quietly eased down and found great sign and a fairly descent blood trail. I was rewarded after about a hundred yards with old Spooky.
He was aged a 7 1/2 and gross scored 127 and change.
