Hunting this year on public land has been tough. Lots of acorns and more pressure than usual has made the big boys hard to come by. I have been after a few toads all year. One is a big nine pointer and a new buck I have on camera that has double drop tines!!!
I decided to give my honey holes a rest and try a few new spots in a different county. Scouted all day long and found a good place inbetween food and a bedding area I have hunted in past years. Hung the stand in the dark and made the 2 mile walk back to the truck with no flashlight.
3:30 the next morning came early! Had a few does come in at 10 yards and continue on. At 9am I decided to do a little rattling. I blew the grunt very aggressively then rattled and followed with a few snort wheezes. 1-2 minutes later this came came running up the draw on a string. The east Texas rut is not over boys! He never knew I was in the world and I stopped him at 5 yards and made the shot that stopped him before he got out of sight. Another rage in the cage success! 17inches wide 3.5-4.5 judging by teath. Not bad for a $48 hunting permit.
This week will be after the double drop!!! Wish me luck boys and girls.

Although I have killed bigger I decided to mount him cause of his very unique and defined black stripe down his nose. None of my other deer mounts have this.
