I closed out the season this past weekend with a trip to the lease with my buddy Paul. Sadly the trail camera showed that the buck I had been hunting all season had broken a beam and gotten really roughed up. An old main frame 8 with a kicker off his g2 had taken over the feeder at my middle stand.
He came in Saturday morning and I noticed he was limping from a wound in one of his front legs. I was not able to get a shot but judged him to be post mature and he needed to be taken.
Saturday night he came in and made the mistake of turning broadside in my shooting lane. The shot looked good and I headed back to camp for lights and a tracking party. We found him about 100 yards from the stand but the coyotes beat us to him. They got about 10 lbs of hind quarter.
Not a great buck but I was happy to get him. It worked out well because Paul shot a really nice nine that the coyotes worked over before we found him. His shoulder mount will be wearing this old guy's cape.
