    Live From Boazmans

    01.04.07
    3:30 P.M.

Planned a return trip to Boazman's Ranch after a trip this past fall. We were to be headed down tomorrow but my hunting buddy came down with bronchitus over the winter break. He keeps hacking up his lungs and feels like he will cough all his deer away. Dang my plan to use him as a distraction failed hahahahahaaha.....

Anyway, I will be headed out after Church tomorrow. Should arrive to meet Caleb and Doug around 3 or 4. I am borrowing my hunting buddies car due to my power steering pump acting up.

I was concerned about hunting regs. and contacted Doug. Since I am on a doe and hog only hunt I will be within "Special Season" regulations that pertain to above HWY. 90 rules.

I will be using my Bladerunner and my Bowtech Pro 40. Bladerunner has two sets of arrows one set 525 gpi for deer. Another set that are just over 650 gpi for hogs. My Bowtech Pro 40 is back up and will be using it if my Bladerunner fails.

I will keep you posted on how things develop.

Took off from Church later then I wanted to yesturday. Didn't get to the ranch until 4:50 p.m. but Caleb had me in the treestand by 5:00 p.m.

While driving into town I saw on a bank sign that it was 81 degrees (argh!). I uploaded the weather report and it was 81 with sustained 15-20 mph winds not good.

On the way to the treestand I heard my release fall out of my pocket and skip across the ground. Great! Never rush a hunt.

Didn't see a thing until right a dusk. I heard a group of hogs 100 yds south of me. 10 minutes later a 9 pointer and 2 does worked a trail just south of me. The 9 pointer went to a water hole. The 2 does were facing mw never presenting a shot. 15 minutes later the hogs came in chasing off the does. There was one real nice Russian with cutters not a huge one but the one that wouldnt come in the last time I was here. I passed on the hogs in hopes that the does would return but things dint turn out that way.

Went to dinner with Caleb. He's a great guide with an incredible personality. Learned a lot about him, ranch hand work, and future career choices. We went to a great Steakhouse on the east side of Hondo.

Ill be in a treestand at 6:30 A.M. After the hunt I gotta find my release.

7:45-8:45 have a 8 pointer buck (2-3 yrs old at most) and a 6 pointer (2 years or less) hangout less then 10 yds from me. 2 does have come in a yearling and its mama. the mother doe scented me and is about 15 yards north of me through thick brush. not going to take her even though shes healthy and the yearling is old enough to survive on her own.

there is this squirrel that im going to tag if he ever sits still long enough

10:00 On my walk back. I saw 4 does. 2 Bull stag. 4 doe stag. 1 buck. 1 Axis. Never could find my release.

Went to lunch with a friens in San Antonio. Took a quick nap.

4:15 pm rode out with Caleb saw a bunch of sheep. One real nice mulan that Ill possibly hunt in the spring.

4:30 in tree stand. Small doe was bedded down less then 20 yds from stand.

5 minutes later a small group of hogs started wondering in but got spooked. one real nice shooter. a fork horned was opposite them about 20 yds. I noticed a group of blacktails crossing into my path but got spooked by a female stag. she came within 10 yds of my stand yearling in tow. a group of 3 yearling doe came in after the stag. no shooters. a huge black sow and 6 pigglets stayed under my stand for about 30 minutes and chased off all the deer and stag.

a fork horned yearling (2 years or less) chased off the hogs but the piggies stuck around. another very healthy spike (2 years or less but 1/4 bigger then the other yearling) fed less then 8 yds from me.

A group of about 8 Audad came within 15 yds until an army of hogs came stomping in. most of the hogs were less then 40 lbs. I waited until a bigger hog came in. had a shot at a real nice porker but one audad was less then 10 yds behind him so I passed.

A nice 6 pointer (3 years) was about 40 yds north of me watching the fun. Finally a fairly good size porker presented itself less then 10 yds from me. I had to red light him tp be sure. I shot he took off south of me i heard him barrell over and do that lst breath thing less then 60 yds from me.

Its pitch dark and 3 stag are working a waterhole 20 yds north of me...

I gotta go find my piggie...
