    My opening weekend recap

I headed to the lease early on Thursday b/c I was too pumped to wait until Friday to leave. I packed the Jeep to the gills inside and out.

I got there, pulled cards, set up the new feeder b/c the coons were doing a number on the other one at this set-up. Friday I hunted my set up on the hill which has been taken over by pigs. I killed two pigs in two hours but in a hurry to get to the stand left my phone and camera in the jeep so no pics of the hogs. I tracked em and drug em both back to the feeder to hopefully deter the other hogs but deep down I know that wont work.
Opening day: I have a set-up in the river bottom that consist of an area of probably 200 acres, I have five stands set up there, some near the feeder, some on trails, and one climber. I saw a flury of deer opening morning, some good, some will be good in a year or two, some out of range.
Beginning of amazing story: I get to the cabin and a buddy tells us that he shot "Slow-Mo" but couldnt find blood. Four of us ate breakfast and went down in the river bottom to look. We found hair and the first blood. We spent four hours and covered about 500 yards trailing blood until the blood trail just stopped. We were dejected to say the least.
    Amazing story part two:
At 7:30am the next morning I get a text from my buddy saying he just shot "Slow-Mo" again. I thought "yeah right", no way. Sure enough, the buck came back to the same spot, jumped in the feed pen with a thru and thru shot in his neck, above the neckbone. Joe stuck him good this time and he was done this time.

I passed on a couple of shooter bucks mainly b/c I have a place I hunt in Harris County that has some monsters and it was going to have to be a true stud for me to kill a buck at the lease. I killed two does, one of which had major carnage and was a very short recovery.

All in all it was a great time. I saw several long spikes that need to be taken but I am saving those for my boys. I will be hunting my Harris County spot for the next couple of weeks so hopefully I will have a big buck to post up.

Congrats. Why not kill a buck at your lease and at the other place?

Unless I dont understand the rules correctly, both Robertson and Harris Counties are AR counties so I believe I can only kill one "trophy buck' and one "cull" no matter which county. Is this not a correct understanding of that game law?

Congrats! You should have given me a shout. I would have brought the quiet AR and but the smack down on some hogs...

As long as the counties are different, you can kill a buck in each county.

Only if they have different bag limits. I believe they are both a 2-2 with only one being over 13". The only way you can harvest more than one buck over 13" in two different Counties is if one has a higher bag limit on them.

Brazos, I need your number bro. Next time I am up there maybe we can meet up. Those hogs have just taken over that dang stand up on the hill. Thank god I have my set ups in the river bottom or my season would look very bleak this year. I took some buds up there a week before the season with AR's and they layed the smack down pretty good. I pulled the cards from that stand and it was the same old, same old, hog town. I think the drought may have a little to do with no deer on the hill. One the lease we are allowed to hunting areas, most of us have one area each on the hill and one in the river bottom. No one has many pics of deer at their hill stands this year but all of our river bottom stands are covered with deer.
I think the deer are staying near the river as its the only source of water on the lease this year. All the creeks and the pond is dry.

By the way, we did not see a decrease in our MLD doe tags this year. We were given 50 doe tags this year which is the same amount as last year. I was expecting to have a decrease with the drought and everyone reporting that theirs had been slashed. The drought has not seemed to hinder the health of our herd. "Slow-Mo" had a live weight of 162 pounds and a dressed weight of 138. That is not a bad weight for our bucks any year.

I'll PM you my #. On the MLD doe tags, with the drought as bad as it's been the herds in general need to be culled out. Survival of the fittest. On my lease we are culling our does. We are giving all mature breeders a free walk this year.

Not the way our local GW explained it to us the first year. As long as the deer were shot in different counties you could use all 3 tags on bucks over 13".
