Here's my two cents. We along with the neighbors on the adjoining 9K acres have stopped shooting spikes. We have a unique genetic trait that causes our deer to often have white spots/ears. We have watched two bucks that were spikes as yearlings become 150+ bucks, including my 157" 16 point two years ago. We have found that spike horns tend to be more nutrition related. We used to see tons of spikes. Three years ago, we figured out we had way to many does. After taking out 50 does and feeding protein, there has not been a single spike seen on our 2K acres from over 15 game cams. Now, I will say this. If he doesnt have a pretty solid 8 points by 3.5, he is smoked. 9+ points have to be 5.5 years old. We have been doing this for 4 years now and we are seeing more 3.5 yo 10's than 8's.
