I crawled into my blind about 0540 Sunday morning after not seeing anything at all on Saturday.
I had just barely got settled in when around 0600 a shadow appeared in front of me. It was to dark to see anything other than a shadow but I could tell it was a deer at the feeder. I watched patiently as the shadow milled around till about 0630 and then wandered off into the shadows, still not knowing what it was I settled in for what I thought was going to be another un eventful morning hunt.
It wasn't long before the silence of morning was broken by the sound of something crunching corn to my right. the sun was up now and I could see clearly. I sat calmly waiting to see what was out there when I saw antlers come into view through the window in my blind. Then the shakes hit me. I grabbed my bow and got ready to draw. The buck stepped forward and I went to draw and bumped the roof of my blind and he bolted. My heart stopped thinking he was gone for good. I leaned forward to see if he was still running but he was just standing there so I waited. He finally turned around and came back to eat some more corn. I drew a different way this time and had to freeze mid draw for what seemed like forever while he stared at me. When he finally went back to eating I finished drawing lined up on the shoulder and waited for him to take one more step. As soon as he did I released he jumped and turned back for the wheat field. I leaned forward and watched him stand on the crest of the little knoll of the wheat field for a few seconds then trot off head down coughing from the clean double lung pass thru and fall down 10 yards from crossing the fence into the trees.
