I was finally able to get out of Houston this past weekend. I hunted out near the Uvalde/Montel area with some friends in hopes of stocking the freezer. This was only my 3rd hunt of the season due to another Fall Marathon (Chicago) and a busy athletic schedule with the boys.
I settled into tripod nestled back into some cedar brush. I saw a lot of deer but most were younger (3-4 yr. old) bucks. The rut is about to kick in so no "wall-hangers" were seen as they were already chasing does back in the brush. Well, after the morning hunt, I finally gotten a chance to "Christian" my new Mathews Reezen bow by drilling a nice pig at at 22yds. He ran off about 40 yards and killed over. The next day as I was trying to talk myself out of shooting a decent, wavy-horned 9 pointer, this older doe was chased into my shooting area by another buck. She stopped at 25 yards and I sent a Muzzy tipped ACC 3-40 arrow through her lungs. She made it about 30 yards before falling over in plain sight. Man, this Reezen is sooooo fast and blew through both animals so quick…I honestly thought that I had missed them! In my remaining couple of hunts, I saw ample deer and pigs but nothing that tempted me to pull back the string. I have a trophy hunt scheduled for January so perhaps I will get to patronize my taxidermist then
