    Mercy Killing

Was in the stand this afternoon when a small 8-pt came limping in to the feeder. Took him two tries to get through the 2-strand wire fence. I could see a large (3-4") wound in his right shoulder, and the leg was twice the size of the other one. Decided I wasn't going to let him leave without at least trying to end his problems, and when he turned, I shot. Thought I had missed at first as the arrow zipped through and stuck in the ground. About the time he made his second jump, the feeder went off too. He ran about 25 yds and stopped and looked back at the feeder, and I was convinced at this point I had missed, so nocked another arrow in preparation for another shot if presented. Then he fell over, flopped a bit, then stood up again, and in about 30 seconds his head began to droop and he fell over dead.

Here's the shot to the feeder:

He wasn't a deer I would shoot--have passed on him several times already, but that shot-up shoulder was too much. It was really sad watching him try to get through the feeder pen wire. Not really a hard decision--hardest part was the pressure of making a good shot and not just wounding him again.

Is there a possibility of infection?
