Bucket list changed on the fly...

I went to the stand Saturday morning with the intention of taking a nice 8 point that has been there regularly for the last 2 weeks. I have seen the buck several mornings, but just wasn't sure he was the buck I would shoot this year. After showing game cam pics to my buddy, he convinced me that I should take him.

Before sunlight, I had a large bodied deer move in under the feeder. I was hoping it was the 8 point that I was after. Several other deer moved in and I was just waiting for enough light to confirm that one of the deer was my target. The feeder went off and scattered all of the deer. I just knew that my 8 would not come back. I was wrong. All of the deer came back.

My original target was in fact the first deer that had showed that morning. I was enjoying watching him control the situation and run the smaller bucks off when they would get too close. I was also waiting for more light and the the right shot opportunity. All of sudden, the buck looked to my left and began to walk backwards away from the feeder. I started to worry that my buck was going to leave without me being able to get a shot off.

A new buck that I have not seen before walked in. This deer walked right in and the other deer moved away giving him plenty of room. I could tell right away that this deer was to be my new target. I picked up my bow, and put my pin on my target. I let the arrow fly and I was sure that I made a good shot. The deer ran to my right quickly moving out of my line of sight. With so many deer under the feeder at the time of the shot, I had a hard time keeping up with which way my deer had gone.

When I finally got off stand, I walked over to my arrow and could tell that I made a good shot. I had lots of bubbly red blood on my arrow and knew that my deer would be down. The problem was that I could not find much blood. I found three small drops walking in the direction that I first saw the deer take off to. The deer was running toward a fence and I was afraid that the deer jumped the fence and was on the neighboring property. I walked up and down the fence looking for blood on either side of the fence, but none was to be found. I was starting to get worried, and was thinking I was going to need some help. God was reading my mind and I saw a shadow move off at a distance across the fence. I first thought that I had pushed my deer, but luckily it was a man that hunts the neighboring property. He came over and introduced himself and offered to help me out. He proved to be quite the tracker and soon found several pin head sized drops of blood that showed that the deer had changed directions out of my line of sight and we soon started to find heavier blood. About an hour later, we had found my deer on my side of the fence. He had run about 150 yards from where he was hit. I was quite relieved and it was so awesome having someone I had never met before come out of nowhere and offer his assistance. Thank you Mr. Smith!
