After work on thursday evening I decided to sneak out to the lease and hunt my "swamp" stand. The pigs have been dominating this setup and the deer have let them have it. My last trailcam check had 150 pics of pigs and 5 of deer. I needed to try to sway those numbers a little, so....
I filled the pig pipe and spread a little corn in my shooting lanes and settled in the popup blind around 5pm. I could hear the pigs squealing and fighting right away, but they didn't appear until last light. OK, I have a confession. I have been working on a crossbow that my stepdad bought and after all that time investment I was anxious to see how it performed on an animal, so that was my weapon of choice for this hunt.
They came running in like a flood. Maybe 30 of them milling around everywhere. I had been getting pics of a giant, so I waited a little while for him to appear. Finally he did, and I took a shot at about 20 yds quartering away. By this time it was pretty dark and I had a hard time seeing the crosshairs, but I felt good about the shot. The herd spooked off a little ways and then came back so I reloaded and took a little boar around 100 lbs. Perfect shot this time took out the heart and he piled up 10 yds away. To my surprise they returned again, but I didn't want to add to the skinning time so I just made some noise and ran them off. After loading the small boar I looked around for the big boar, but decided to return in the morning.
I was disappointed after 2 hours looking I was unable to find the big boar. I found my arrow with good blood after a pass thru, but we had a couple of showers early friday morning and no blood trail to follow.
I got back in the popup around 5 Friday evening and waited. I had 3 does hanging around, but all small so I gave them a pass and waited to see if the piggies would return. With good light around 6pm I had several pigs appear, but they seemed nervous for some reason
and wouldn't come within range. Finally at last light I had 2 that couldn't resist. I made a perfect shot on this huge sow broadside. After a little wait I started trailing. There was very little blood, just a drop here and there. I found her after a short 20yd search. My poor old honda had a hard time dragging her out. My biggest pig to date with a bow(even if I did cheat and use a xbow!).
It was a fun hunt and maybe now the piggies will let the poor old whitetails have a place at the table
