Three year dry spell came to an end.

I finally took a deer. I took my last deer in the 2006 season. It isn't because I didn't see any, I just didn't take any.

This morning I was in my stand about 20 minutes before shooting time. It was 42° and cold. About 10 minutes after legal shoting time, I saw movement. Then I saw antlers. It was a really tall 8 point. He came in to my feeder. I looked him over and decided he was too close to the 13" to shoot. I let him walk. He eventually worked his way out of there. About 20 minutes later I see a big heavy 8 point coming towards me. I pull out my binoculars and realize he is just about even with his ears. I watch as he walks directly at me and passes me at 3 yards. Just as he passes, I see movement from the trail he came from. Next I see antlers. The buck steps out into an opening at 70 yards and I see without binoculars he is outside his ears. He is traveling the same trail as the other. I knew he would pop out of the woods directly in front of me at 3 yards. I was watching for movement in the brush and just as I saw him about to come out of the woods, I went to full draw. He must of heard something, because he started walking fast and he walked to another trail. I had a 10 foot opening to shoot him before he passed directly under my stand. I followed and let the arrow fly at an almost directly downward shot. My arrow did not pass through. I was shocked. I saw blood squirt upwards. Both deer ran off and I heard them busting through brush. I waited 30 minutes then climbed down. I got my tracking dog and started on the trail. It has sprays of blood then one drop here and there. He went about 60 yards total and was caught up in briar. The arrow was broken off where he fell on it. The broadhead went along the edge of the spine directly through the heart and got stuck in the sternum. It only barely grazed one lung. It basically went between them. There was about 1/2" of the broadhead sticking out the skin on the bottom.

He is 15" wide and I am calling him a 10pt.

The minivan in the last picture isn't mine.

    Enjoy the pictures.

    Me and Izzy.

Here is the angle of shot. I put the arrow back in for the picture.

    The best heart shot.
