I am real late on posting about this hunt.
Brother Bill joined me this year at the Jones ranch.
Bill elected to hunt a ladder stand overlooking the ranch road and travel route for the deer. The route leads right to the wheat field.
I hunted a ladder stand in a draw that leads to the wheat field.
Bill and I got to our stands either because we had seen deer moving late in the morning. We drove into the wheat field and there were 8 doe feeding in the middle of the field. The doe right off in the direction of Bill's stand.
I dropped Bill off and corned his shooting lanes. I was about 100 yards from Bill's stand when I saw a bobcat running down the road. I guess the bobcat had the same idea was already out hunting.
I parked the truck and walked to my stand. I saw a group of hens near my stand and I tried to stalk them. Well that didn't work so I just walked to my stand. I threw out some corn into my shooting lane.
The feeder is to my left and I like to corn about 15 yards away to slow them down. The feeder went off and it was about 30 minutes later four young bucks showed up. Two of them started fighting and I tried to video tape the action.
After the quick fight, one of the bucks was watching the road I had just walked down. I cannot see the road from my stand so I just watch him to see if he was about to run or relax.
Well he relaxed and went back to feeding. I was watching them when I caugh movement to my right. This doe popped out at five paces from my ladder stand.
I drew back and held pin low and released. The arrow went through the shoulder and out the opposite side. She ran into the brush and then up the same trail as my buck.
I listened and I heard her crash. I waited about fifteen minutes and got down.
I found my arrow and the best blood trail ever. I knew she went up the trail, but I followed the blood. I saw her laying in the center of the trail. When I field dressed her I had hit the heart and lungs.
It was still early so I loaded up my doe and waited until it was time to pick up Bill. He radioed me and said he got a doe. I saw Bill standing in the road and he said he had a good blood trail and we talked for a few minutes. I finally said is your deer the size of mine. He had this look of shock on his face. He didn't even bother to ask me if I had got one. He was so excited about his deer.
I will let Brother Bill tell the rest of the story
