A few days ago, we were at the ranch hosting a hog hunt and i decided that would try for that ever so difficult first hog with a bow experience.
Bow: Fred Bear Element 62lbs
Arrow: Carbon Express Axis w/ blazer vanes
Broadhead: G5
Camo: Leafy suit and scent blocker spray
Weather: RAIIIIIINNNNNINNNNNGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I drove to my blind, where i had a tripod set up over a feeder a hundred yards and fifty away. I parked the truck, put on my gear, gave myself one last spray down with scent blocker and walked to my tripod. When i got to to the tripod i noticed the wind had changed directly down-wind to the feeder. instead of moving, i made the mistake of sitting in the tripod. it was around 6:00 and didnt think that it would hurt if i sat in there for a few minutes and got set up.WRONG. 3 minutes after sitting down 26 hogs came charging into the feeder in a feeding frenzy. They quickly caught wind of me and ran off, this was my chance to move. I moved 30 yards downwind of the feeder and set up in bush. I waited for a few minutes and decided that i would have a better chance of spot and stalk from the blind so i moved once again to the blind where i had parked the truck. I sat in the blind and no more than 6 minutes after i set up for the third time, the same hogs came flying into the feeder again and started feeding. This was my chance to spot and stalk. I had done it once before but hoped that this time i would be able to get a shot. I moved directly downwind of myself 200 yards and then cut toward them. I then moved directly upwind to their location and crawled the final 100 yards through stickers *WORLD's MOST WORTHLESS PLANT*, i got to the feeder after seemingly exhausting every last drop of adrenaline and stood behind a tree 30 yards from the feeding hogs. The wind started to swirl and they started to get a whiff of me and started to move downwind(which i figured they would). There was a small opening to my left where they were to move and i drew and held............the biggest sow came directly into my pins at about 20 yards. it was freaking AWESOME!!!!...apparently, i still had some adrenaline and it immediatly reminded me that sows like to protect their pigletts, which there were about 10 of. I put the 20 pin behind her shoulder and up about 4 inches and released..........SMACK! she took off and dropped dead 60 yards away. .....Clean pass through.....she weighed around 220 and was worth every bit of effort. it was freaking AWESOME!!! This is the first hog taken with a bow at my ranch and we are all pretty excited.....
