    The "Pit" and the Falls

I started over to the ranch in my usual fashion, just a nice drive across the mountain to the other side. I was planning on meeting Arrowflicker to fill feeders and change batteries if needed.

I was just emerging from the tunnel when the phone rang, it was rick saying there was a traffic accident out his way and it had things all tied up, He'd be there as soon as he could. As I pulled in the parking area (yep the good luck parking area)
I remembered, I had finally remembered to put the game camera in the truck, I fiddled with the date and time put on my pack, grabbed the Bloody Ugly longbow and headed out to the "stands".
The area was still trashed like it always is, logs scattered from the pile I had made, because the corn is being thrown farther with the new rechargeable batteries.

I looked at the tracks they were small, I mean small.... thumb size prints with a couple nice size tracks too..........Hmmm.... Sow with piglets.

I check the feeder and it still had 3-4 inches of corn, and the battery was as more healthy than a store bought battery for the amount of time it's been in the field. I placed the camera on the corner of the cage trap and put a stick behind it to hopefully give me the best angle for some hog pictures.

My phone rang again, rick told me the feed store was closed by the time he got there, So he'd buy corn next week and fill feeders but he was till an hour away... no problem I told him and that I was on the way to sit the "Pit" for the evening to see if I could kill something with Brudda pete's bloody ugly longbow.(if you saw it you'd understand)

Within 20 minutes I was pulling into my second lucky parking area. I talked with one of the ladies that has a paddock with a pig problem too. She told me the Sow with weaned piglets was just there 5 minutes before I got there and the dogs ran her off...........Just my luck 5 minutes late and $1.00 short......As I said...Just my luck !!!

I looked around for a good area to set the cage trap, I explain to her where and how I was going to get rid of her hogs, she seemed relieved that I was going to do it the next day or till they were caught.

I walked back to the truck, grabbed my gear and the ugly...err bloody ugly bow and made my way to the "Pit". The area was a soupy mess, they had been there not too long ago, the smaller hogs come in clean up and the other hogs suck wind for something to eat.
I climbed into the condo and got all ready to sit for the evening, a quick gland at my phone watch( ok....a long arm stare trying to get the numbers in focus) told me I think it was 4:50 pm bout and hour and a half to hunt.

I unzipped the pack and reached inside fumbling for the remote, a click flick and I heard the feeder spring to life. It ran for a short 3 seconds, I sat till 5 Oclock then hit the button again.
3-4 minutes later I heard and saw something in the brush coming down the hill, they stopped mid-way down the hill and started that "OH crap somethings not right grunting".....suddenly the two smaller hogs ran though the scent cone like rushing through a enemy fire zone.

They walked into the clearing and headed to the "Pit", when just 10 yds off to my right a large hog sounded off with a loud Alarm !! It kinda startled me(Ok, scared me shiftless) as I snapped my head to the right just in time to see a large multi colored hog standing looking dead at me on the same level I was... Just standing on the side of the hill, she not only smelled me.... she was looking dead at me. I guess I need to put up a gunny sack or two on the right side too.

She was very vocal of her displeasure of my presence there in her world.
She backed off, sounding off as she left. All the smaller hogs were now on full alert as to why she was ticked off. As the breeze made the gunny sacks sway like they always do...... that was too much for them. They moved to and stayed on the back side of the "Pit" area pacing back and forth.

They finally and reluctantly went back up the hill sounding off as they went. Well, I guess now they are little bit more wise to whats going on. it's ok, they still have no clue about the back platform yet (My plan B)

As I enjoyed the fading evening light, the sow I nick-named clown, tried to make her way down another trail on the down wind side, the slight breeze again....gave away my position for a second time. she just turned and walked away.

I gather my gear and slowly walked out as the last light of the evening was slipping over the mountain top. I smiled and told God.... thank you for painting such a beautiful picture.

I just put the pack in the bed of the truck, I look down the path towards the barn I had visited earlier when I saw 3 small hogs standing in the far right tire path.............Oh my goodness.....Hogs !!!
Still might be able to salvage the evening after all. I made my way slowly down the path using what weeds as I could for cover. I stopped just short of the owners parking area for her paddock, There were 6 small hogs milling around, yep they were weaned all right... Now..... where's your Momma?

But the evenings light was fading fast and they went back across the road into the woods and I could see places of weeds moving around... Now I have a idea where to set the trap tomorrow

Tonight I was carrying pete's Bloody ugly and 3 3555 Gold tip arrows tipped with razor sharp Simmons 100 Gr landsharks.
But it's only fair to have a disclaimer:
No animals were harmed during this story.

Thanks for coming along,What a great night.

            Cool story.

So what game do you have on your ranch in Hawaii? Do you put the feeders up just for the pigs? I've never been to Hawaii and don't know anything about native hunting.

                Aloha,

Hawaii is like Texas in some regards, we too have hog problems, they tear up everything. If people actually sat down and ran the numbers of one breed sow and one boar thay would be amazed.
The ranchs I care take one is a horse/stable ranch so the ride trials and do horse shows and the like, the other is a small cattle, horse open ranch 240 acres when it don't rain and 40 acres in the monsoon season. (no joke)

Here in Hawaii was have a few game mammals,
Axis Deer, Mouflon sheep, Columbian Blacktails deer, 3 types of goats, 3-4 types of sheep/ hybreds of the mixture and hogs, plenty of those.
On private land we hunt them all all year long. A land tag is $50 for the yr and you can kill as many deer/goats sheep as you want. Public land has restrictions to one each per day.

Now having said that ! you'll kill 10 whitetail to every Axis deer. They are very smart critters. they will bust you from a half mile away.

We also have the best Game bird hunting too we have 17 out of the 21 birds here in Hawaii to include the Rio Grande Turkey. turkey season is just like yours spring and fall our bird season is limited to weekends and state holidays Nov to Jan.

And we have a huge lake that surrounds the all the Islands, no fishing license required. The catch out there most of the time will be under #50 or over #500, there is a ew in between so there's something for everyone

we also have Elk on the Island of Maui but it's a private herd to antler farming. I tried to do that but I guess I planted them to deep they didn't grow

We have no snakes here, no small game animals. but lots of Rats and mongoose (yeah the snake killers)

Hope that answeres your quary about the Hawaiian Islands.

If ya have any other questions ask away. and yes most of the women wear the coconuts and lots don't, I love the windy days too the skirts are really flyin.
