First of all I would like to thank Bassmatt for organizing such a great hunt!
Day 1-Biggs (Jared Lanig)and I arrived at Thompson's about 1pm on Friday and immediately started scouting. We scouted and saw some nice rams, but we weren't out to start hunting. We finally came back to camp at 6pm.
Day 2- Biggs and I headed out at first light. We were on a mission to kill big back country rams, so we prepared to spot and stalk all day, carrying all the supplies with us that we might need to last us until dark. We went up the far left side of the property by the entrance and scaled that mountain. We immediately found rams and set up for an ambush. These rams grazed right into us within 10yrds. I drew back on a ram, but couldn't see his opposite side, so we let them walk off. At 1030am, we were clear to stalk through all the stands on top of the mountain, giving everybody time to hunt and leave so we didn't ruin their morning hunt. We spent the rest of the day stalking from one site to the next. We got on plenty of good rams, just not what I was looking for. About 530pm Jared decided to go after some rams on a huge mountain face. Long story short, we caped and packed out a ram with backpacks. At last light I sat in the creek down from the trailer and had a hog move in to the hay. I slammed him, but was not able to recover it due to the lack of light and hellish terrain that he ran to. We did find some blood, but really didn't have much of a trail. We didn't make it back to camp until 730pm that night.
Day 3- Last morning of the hunt, I didn't think I was going to do anymore, but I had a feeling that I should just go hike around. Me and TXfireguy spotted some rams on a hill side about 1/3 of a mile from camp. We went after them for a few hours playing tag. We could never get into bow range. Finally they started heading down the hill and I jumped this merino at the base of the hill in the creek. I got a complete pass through and he started wobbling and fell over.
Summary, I had a great time with all of these guys, Bassmat, the Orr family, Kirby, Txfireguy, and all the others that made camp more than worth the trip. And thank all of y'all for the hospitality and great cooking!
Also, I highly recommend that if you go to TT's, that you take the high road and treat it like a great alaskan mountain hunt. Spot all day and hike the killer hills until your legs and feet hate you. It really puts the hunt in ram hunting and you will appreciate the ram you worked so hard for.
The first pic is just from one of the hill tops we took a break at.
Second pic is from one of the breaks we took. We made a little fire to keep warm and ate some food in the field.
Third pic is my ram, fleshed out ready to get boiled for the awesome euro.
