First let me say that this was by far one of the best hunts I have ever been on. Bugscuffle ranch is a fine place to hunt and run by some of Texas best. Bryan (T-post) is one hell of a guide/outfitter/friend and also a special thanks to Jeremy (1stinlastout) for coming back this year to help guide for our hunt.
Friday evening I was in stand and watching 20 to 30 blackbuck and 8 axis feeding around me. The black buck were real spooky and any sound had them jumping and scaring off the axis. One of the axis was a huge doe that I wanted. After the second time the blackbuck spooked, the big axis doe left and never returned. I had a smaller doe in my sights but after seeing the big gal I put my bow down.
Around 6:00 I saw movement out in front of me and watched a red deer walk up to a perfect shooting lane. We had permission to shoot any red deer hind or spike for a small additional fee. OMG!! I had a 250lb red deer spike at 18yds slightly quartering to me. My heart was pumping so hard I just knew he would hear it. It took maybe 5 minutes to get a good broadside shot so I took aim low (did I mention the hang-on was 27' up...) and released.
I watched the arrow hit about 3" higher than I aimed as he dropped a little and saw him fall after running 26yds. First heart shot I have ever had on any animal!! BOO YAH
I like to think I'm a fair shot with a bow but most drop like a rock and I end up dbl lunging them.
This is gonna be some fine table fare...
