I was lucky to spend most of 7 days in Frio County after Christmas, much of it with my family. The pictures and stories chronicling Kara and Nathan’s excitement and success will be forthcoming. Mid-week, Kara and the kids went back to Austin, giving me a chance to hunt. That evening I was torn between hunting a very big eight point I’ve seen at the windmill all Fall, or an old 10 point that has been hanging out near a new blind we put up just before the season. The lease boss suggested I hunt the ten, so off I went.
Got in the blind at 3:30 pm and spent the better part of 30 minutes getting situated. Having only hunted out of a Matrix for the last two years, it took some work getting my filming equipment in optimal position. About 4:00 I was ready for whatever the evening might bring.
Not five minutes later, I looked up and a doe was right in front of me. Following on her heals was the bob-tailed ten point I was after. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect situation. He was broadside at 18 yards, calm as can be. What happened next nearly made me lose my lunch, but the ending was more than I could ask for.

He grossed 143”, beating my last buck by 2”. This one is going on the wall.

Autopsy revealed a 1.5” slice to the side of his heart. No way to know if it happened upon impact or from the broad head flailing back and forth as he made the 60 yard death dash. Upon reviewing the shot in the blind, I immediately started texting a few others and confessing the terrible shot. I wasn’t expecting anything but dejection when I got out of the blind to look for my arrow and blood. Imagine my surprise when I saw him belly up, 50-60 yards from the blind. Amen, I tell ya!
