I was hunting about 150yds from a feeder that I could see. I was set up near some scrapes. Well about 5:30 I see a nice buck coming in to the feeder. I watched him feed under it with 3 does and a spike for about 15 minutes with no sign of leaving. So I decided to try to grunt him in.
I grunted a couple of times and they all looked my way but then went back to eating. I grunted again and they again looked for a minute and went back eating. So this time I decided to do a doe esterus bleat followed by tending buck grunts. Big boy immediatly headed my direction.
I put away my call and got ready, not knowing how quickly he might close the gap. He came about 50 yards and then seemed to lose interest. He then crossed the clearing and went to work one of his scrapes that I had a trailcam set on. While he was doing that , I got my call back out and did more doe bleats and buck grunts. He immediatly went back accross the clearing and proceeded my way.
He got about 75 yards from me and cut into the woods out of sight. But I could tell by his demeaner that he was coming. I gave him one more series of bleats and grunts and got ready.
He was walking about 20 yards inside the tree line when he got even with me. He then took a sharp turn right out to the edge of the clearing ,20 yards in front of me.
I checked my sight, body position and then drew while he was passing behind the last few trees. He stopped slightly quartering towards me ,but still almost broadside. I took careful aim and the squeezed the trigger . WHACKKKKKKK !!! Man I love that sound !!
He took off tearing down the forest as he went. I knew it was a good shot but, I wanted my dog to get more tacks under her belt. So I went and got "Ann".
I took her to where the buck was standing and there was blood right there were he stood. He left a heavy blood trail that anyone could follow. Ann went right to him ! He went about 50 yards and it took her about 1 minute to drag me through the brush to him !
Good Girl Ann !!
