Headed out late Friday night with the folks after my mom finally got off work around 8 PM. Five hours later we arrived at the lease and were greeted by some chilly temps. The truck thermastat read 37 and normally it's pretty close, give or take a couple degrees. Unloaded the truck as quickly as possible and climbed in bed to get as much of the 3 hours of sleep as we could.
5:00 AM Saturday came real early that morning, but we drug ourselves outta bed and into the treestands by 6 or so. With the cool temps and great weather I had high hopes for the morning hunt after it being extremely slow going the times hunting this season. Anyways, I wasn't in the stand 15 minutes before I heard a couple deer come directly underneath me, could barely make out they're silhouttes in the faint light. After daylight I saw approx 10 does and an old 6 pointer that I saw last year also. If he shows back up next weekend while my mom is in the box blind with her .243 he may have some problems. Met up with my old man around 9 and discussed what we had seen. No shot oppurtunities, but just really nice to start seeing some deer.
4:00 PM Saturday and we were back in the stands again. I decided to try another stand that we had checked after the morning hunt and it seemed to have alot of activity around it. About 5:30 I heard some noise from behind the stand and glanced over my shoulder to see a nice mature doe easing her way down the trail. After 2 weekends with no shot oppurtunities you would have thought a 150 class 10 was coming into range because my heart was racing like crazy. Twenty minutes later she finally steps into the open and I let my 2 blade Rage fly right into the sweet spot. She only made it about 30 yards before crashing down, still insight. Man was I pumped up, first deer down of the '09 season. Decided to stay in the stand to see what else would come by with there still being alot of daylight left in the day. Saw a few more does and a pretty nice young buck right before dark.

5:00 AM Sunday and deja vu from the day before. Back to the same stands as Saturday. Lots of deer seen, but nothing to show for it. All in all a great weekend in the woods with the folks. I can't be there next weekend for opening of general season, but this weekend puts a better outlook on the future.
Stopped in Bandera at texasduck's place to pick up a female Dachsund puppy for my fiance. As you can tell she's already right at home at our place and is living the good life. She's been wanting a puppy for awhile now and she doesn't mind so much when I'm gone all weekend when I bring puppies home with me... now I just need to figure out what to do next time.
We decided on the name Kimber for the puppy.
