After 7 years of bowhunting my dad finally scored his first bow kill!!
On October 18th we left my house at 4:45 and drove an hour over to the little 30 acre place a friend lets me hunt on near Roaring Springs.
I had hunted the last Sunday morning, seeing a spike that i thought was a two year old. I made my self pass him thinking that it would be a good deer for my dad to shoot.
We did only see one deer, but it was not the spike I expected to see. The buck came in at first light, it was light enough to see the deer, and his hornes, so when he presented the shot I told my dad to take him. That was when every thing just happend. First my dad whispers to me I think my site is broken,
I look down and the quiver mount was split in two, so the screws holding on the sight were loose.
Yes the sight was loose, but not that loose, the sites just dropped down about a sixteenth of an inch, so I pushed them back up and they stayed. Now for the shot, sounded great, but the deer only ran about four steps then comes back in and goes to feeding. Needless to say this all happend in about twenty seconds.
The buck is calmly eating and I am trying to calm my father down because I think that we might get another shot at him. After a few seconds, he has another arrow nocked and gets ready for the shot. The buck put his leg forward exposing the heart, and I tell dad to take the shot when he is ready. Another fire, and a miss, but this time I see where the arrow flew! On the first shot I was looking at the video camera and not the buck, but i saw that the arrow flew perfect, but the deer ducked about six inches, I knew that it was over, as the buck fleed the scene.
To my ultimate surprise the deer comes back in and goes straight to feeding without a care in the world! This time I hand my dad one of my arrows, and tell him to shoot right at the bottom of the chest, and thwack, the buck falls in his tracks, i have only seen this on tv, but it was a perfect shot.
All in all it was one of the best experiences that I have ever had. It is not often that a son gets to see his mentor fall to pieces with excitement!
I know that the deer, was a young deer, but he had a monstorus body. He weighed in at 170 lbs! Where we hunt a large doe will wiegh maybe a hundred pounds.
Congradulations Dad
