    Shark vs. Aoudad Sheep

    Shark vs. Aoudad Sheep

I will start off by saying that not all hunts end up with meat in the cooler. Nonetheless, hunts are about the experience. So I will discuss my experience about a recent hunt. Earlier this week, I was fortunate to have hunted a ranch outside of Waco called Rock Creek Ranch. After discussing the hunt on numerous occasions with the ranch manager, Mr. Jack Becker, I made arrangements to help him thin out his aoudad herd. Upon arrival, I was met by Jack and his part time guide, Steve. Both were very nice and put me at ease. We took a short drive down into the property and made our way to the stand. For this hunt, I hunted from a large pop up ground blind. Shortly after day break, a nice herd made their way down to the stand. Once we agreed upon which female I was suppose to shoot, I then studied her movements. When she quartered away, I decided to draw back. I placed my pin just behind the shoulder and squeezed my release. Within seconds, I could see and hear that the arrow hit where I was aiming. She took off and our day began. We waited in the stand for about 15 minutes and then proceeded to pick up my animal. Much to our surprise, she was nowhere in sight, so we began to track. After about an hour, we found her. She was just ahead at about 100 yards. Because she was still moving and proceeding to disappear into the hill country, Jack got in his truck and tried to cut off the herd and possibly get a shot off. He was able to catch up to the herd, but when he went to shoot, no bullet in the chamber. The animals then moved on past the truck and trotted up the ridge. We tried everything to find her!!! Some 6 hours later, we decided to call it. I am positive she is down, but we could not find her. It kills me that she escaped with an arrow inside her. I guess in retrospect, I must have hit just a “hair” to far to the right and just missing the vitals? I was so worried about hitting the shoulder that maybe it was bit to high of shot? My shot looked looked good to both of us, and you could see the blood on the fur, but then again it seemed not to phase her; she just kept on going!

Overall, my experience was great and would highly recommend this ranch and Mr. Jack Becker. He did everything possible to find my animal. He never even hinted that we should give up!! I truly respect the fact that he and his crew worked hard to find my animal even though, let’s face it, this was by no means a six digit animal. In fact, this was just a meat/cull hunt. If you want to help him thin out the herd, he has quite a few more females on his 700 acre ranch that need to go.

www.rockcreekranchhunt.com. I failed to mention that he has various other animals on the ranch including some nice axis (several in the 40 inch range), sika, fallow, black buck, and other surprises. He also has some nice whitetail bucks, but those are big money. I personally had never seen so many animals, but then again I have only been on a couple of ranches before. Give Jack a call and I sure he work out a deal for you.

They do not have any tracking dogs of their own. Actually, I think they were looking for someone to have on their staff, or at least someone they could call when these situations happen. Give them a call.

Too bad to hear about your lost animal...not trying to be critical at all but it might have helped to have waited longer than 15 mins before pursuing the animal...gives them time to lay down, bleed out, and expire.

                      .

I don't like to let an animal get away when it is wounded, especially when I don't get to go on paid hunts very often (this is only my second trip).
