    Bowfishing brains chime in....

So I decided to get into bowfishing and got one of those cheap "reel" setups where You have to wind it more than "reel" it. It seems to work fine after some mods. My issue is that after I shoot a gar and start hauling it in, I have to lift the gar 5-6ft up to the dock. what is hapaning is that the string seems to be being cut buy the scales of the fish and I loose them. So far I have been lucky and recovered 2 out of the 3 arrows I have shot{somewhere out there there is a gar with an arrow through it. lol}. Is it just cheap low lbs. string or do I need to invest in a gaff{sp}? Any advice on this issue and any other bowfishing tips and tricks would we great.

    Thanks,
    M

200# Fast-Flight line should solve the problem,

I've always used 400# fast flight or the Muzzy 200# and haven't had that problem.

Great thanks. Guess I'm heading out to locate some new line. By the way, what the heck is up with the limit on gar?!

better line will help, but a gaf is awful handy.........the only limit on gar is alligator gar, you can still shoot as many long nose and spotted gar as you want.......

If you are punching completely through the fish, a gaff is going to be your best solution. If not 200# fast flight or bigger, or 250# Power Pro is your best bet.

Definitely cable noose or gaff. My friend made a gaff out of heavy duty rebar and it works very well.
