    East texas food plots

well heres the dilemma i am in..... i normally dont plant a food plot because of the cows at my lease well this year im going to throw the dice i have about a 40 yard by 25 yard spot which is in the woods but looks open enough to plant sucessfully . my question is what to plant and when? ive always heard oats, wheat,ry grass, peas and so on............. well i would like to have something that would hopefully last a while both early season and late season... whats yalls take on biologic and is it worth it and what would draw the deer in? thanks for the help,

I always plant rye grass at least. Sometimes other stuff but they always seem to like rye grass. November is usually when they start to eat it a lot. I know people that say deer dont eat it but I have seen them pass up brassica, turnups, and lots of other biologic stuff to eat it. After it matures and goes to seed the hogs will go crazy for it too. I counted 30 hog backs at one time in an acre of rye grass earlier this year.

Im sure there are other more beneficial plants but I havent found any that grow really well AND get eaten by the deer yet. Maybe I will learn something here too.

X2 on the rye grass. I put the seed in my feeder and let it cast it for me.
spread a little by hand too.

I have really gotten away from food plots in recent years. I have started raking out from under my favorite oak trees. Early in the year I fertilize at their drip edges. Deer will travel for miles to get to a whiteoak tree that has acorns that are easy to pick up off the ground.

              Good Luck

I usually plant the Deer mix, I pick it up at the Feed Store. I believe it is produced bt East Texas Seed Co... It has a good vairity Wheat, oats, rye, clovers, peas and sometimes I put in an extra bag or two of Winter Wheat depending on how big your plot is, you wont need it. I use 13-13-13 but you are going to need H2O... I havent had much luck with straight rye either, But what GR5 said will work great also... good Luck this season.

Yes sir dont bother buying it.
I used it in my side yard to see if it will grow, "it did not grow a single blade of anything".

You are going to need a lot of lime.

Iron clay peas, soybean and a mix of winter grasses if you can swing it.

I was on a lease out of Newton and the deer loved rye grass. On our lease in Shelby county I have not found anything they will eat.
