    Taking Archery Lessons

I am relatively new to the archery game and I want to make sure I am doing it right. One thought I had was to take archery lessons. I know that Smithfield Archery in Ft. Worth offers them. Anyone have an opinion on lessons being helpful or not & if they are good, where to go in D/FW?

Like golf or any other sport, good form will make a huge difference and proper instruction will always help if you're a good student.

Just remember there is a huge difference in someone who is a good shot trying to help you and someone who is a good instructor actually helping you.

I would suggest that you get an NAA certified instructor. I don’t know any in your area but I’m sure there are folks here that can point you toward someone.

There are several NAA high performance coaches in Texas and a good one lives in the Fort Worth area. Rob Romero has coached many good archers, including Kendra Harvey, an alternate to the 2000 olympics in athens and 2007 world indoor team member. Bob is equally versed coaching compound or recurve archers. Bob can be emailed at robertrom@msn.com

I can also recommend Jared Kimmel, Xspot on TBH.com, as a knowledgeable archery instructor from the DFW area.

There is nothing you can buy to put on your bow that will make you a better archer than spending the equivalent money on a good session with a coach.

Just an FYI, Bob Romero trains for target archery and does not feel that he is equipped to train bowhunters. Thanks!

I don't know much about target archery, but it seems to me that something learned in target archery would equally apply to bow hunting, at least with regards to general archery form and shooting skills. Somebody please correct me if I am incorrect in this statement.

Find a local 3d range - and hook up with some of the more experienced shooters there and start shooting with them - or find a pro shop where the tech. is a staff shooter - Fay at North Texas Archery in Farmersville is a staff shooter for Mathews and when I notice I am having problems I go to him for correction in form. Goodluck and don't let yourself get overwhelmed by it all.

i think lessons are a great idea... i've been out of archery for a while and i start lessons this wednesday with Tom... i couldn't think of a better way to spend money for archery. i think something you learn for archery be it form, correct way to release, aim and so on tranfers equally across the board.

take lessons it will help you on form, release and aiming. Smithfield is a great shop and there are some good shooters that shoot for them that will also help you.

And actually, it was Bob who bowed out when I told him I was planning on using the skills for hunting. He felt like he was teaching a totally different style of archery than would be used in killing deer, etc. I'm glad he spoke up.

Jered, I may get with you when I get back in town. I'm doing pretty good but feel I need to get "over" the edge. At 40yds I usually have a 4" group but have the occasional flyer. I'm sure it's form...
I'll PM you as I get closer to coming home.

Oh, and I shoot a Mathews...

Sorry Bob didn't work out. As I said, Jared is an excellent archer and a very good bowhunter. He will be a good fit for you to learn how to shoot and bowhunt.
