    video help please

Awhile back I ask about some video cameras and it came back that MiniDV was the best but the wife didn't want to fool with tapes... long story short we ended up with a JVC w/HDD. Decent camera I guess but the files have an extension of .MOD and Windows Movie Maker doesn't recognize .MOD files. The sofware that comes with it sometimes hangs up or just shuts down my computer (common from what I've been reading). I've heard that I could just change the .MOD extension to .MPG and it would work with Moive Maker, so anyone know how this is done? Also what is the difference between an .AVI, .MPEG1 and .MPEG2 file?

That's the problem with using technology that hasn't been perfected yet and also the reason tape is still the way to go-for now.
Hard drive cameras and the format they record in 'just aren't there' yet and the formats and programs and drivers and conversion processes are more than what most 'home computers' can handle.
If you don't have a computer bought for editing or specifically for your type of movie format then problems are going to be compounded.

There's no easy fix to change from one format to another especially from a hard drive format and I really have no advice for you.
A conversion/converter for hard drive formats to mpg is the only thing I can think of and it won't be cheap and it won't be easy. It's not something you just 'change over'.........it's a computer process that will involve downloading, uploading, rendering time, conversion time and reading time. It will take up ALOT of hard drive space and take alot of time also.
    Good luck.
