I've been working on the wife for a few years to go hunting with me but she has to have her smokes. My question is for the guys that do smoke do you light up on the stand or do you holdout till after. The times you did smoke did you spook/see deer ????

I dont smoke so I dont have that problem, but a buddy of mine does and doesnt think it spooks deer at all. But he is also a gun hunter that doesnt need to be close to get a shot. I personally think if you give deer any reason to think something is up they will bust you everytime. I can smell cigarettes from a pretty good distance and my nose is no match for a deer's.

I put down the smokes a couple months ago so a non issue for me now, but when I did smoke, I always smoked in my stand, I would smoke right after I got in to "calm" myself, But as I sat, The more time passed I would smoke as I wanted, On many occasions I had to put a cig out to draw my bow. I think pop ups hide alot, movement, odor, etc. If I was on my tri pod I guess it went over thier heads, I don't know. I don't believe it ever cost me a shot

People talk alot about deer spooking off cig smoke.
2 years ago while scouting a threw a lit cig off my 4 wheeler in the road and went down about 100 yrds to work on one of my stands. A doe walks out and went right up to the cig and didnt spook. Now, she jumped back a bit when she put her nose right up to it, but didnt really spook.
I think deer are like people. Some are bothered by it, and some arent.

I gave up smoking in the woods back in 2004. Started playing the scent game. Growing up, I would hunt with my dad, and he had his 8am smoke, and then the deer came by. Now we were rifle hunting from the ground in big woods PA, but we never could see further than 50 yards, so if we saw deer, they had to be Bowhunting close.
I remember many times having to put out a cig when they came in. But.....I have seen WAY more deer since playing the wind/scent game.

If the deer are used to the smell or do not associate it with humans it won't matter. If you drive a gas pickup and the landowner drives a diesel and is on the place almost daily the gas pickup will spook them quicker than a cigarette. If they have been subjected to smells and sounds with no danger they become use to it and soon lose their fear of those smells and sounds.
