It all depends on the carrier like Buckassassin said att wants there cut, a friend has VZ and data access which includes the phone as a modem dont know about the others. Mine (depending on the area) is fairly fast,
i thought about it till I found out it was going to cost me 60.00/month for the tethering package and I have the unlimited data package for my blackberry. thats the only thing that urks me about ATT
I tether my Blackberry Curve (AT&T - EDGE) quite often and after closing all windows and applications,I typically achieve speeds is in 800-900 kbps range. Of course, the more apps the more you lose speed. However I must say, it's still not bad at all even with Outlook, Explorer, and a number of others all cranking at the same time. I find slow, sputtering connectivity extremely frustrating and I've had no complaints using the BB tethering technique. Especially so when there is no other alternative.
Better have a data plan on your phone and don't tell AT&T you're doing it or they'll stick their hand out.
Same here. Switched to blackberry for work and haven't done it. The corporate blackberry server uses the same filter as our desktop so most sites I want to surf away from work are blocked (tbh included).
I used mine at the lease to check my fantasy football, it was faster than my dsl at home, buy you have to make sure that you have the data package coz if you dont, it can become quite pricey, and i did it through blue tooth
My phone has wireless capabilities. There is a software that will capitalize on this and turn your phone into a wireless router, to which you can tether your computer wirelessly to use the phone's broadband connection. It's called wmwifirouter. Oh yeah, it's for Windows Mobile based phones.
I've done it with verizon. Night's and weekends were free, even without a data package. It is a "back door" that they left open (none of the techs is the stores will know about it). I discovered it online through an RV forum. Eventually got tired of not being able to get on during the day, so purchased an air card and data package.
Speed was adequate, much better than dial-up. I'm very pleased with the speed I am getting with the air card.
i have a blackberry 8330 curve and i tether all the time. I have sprint with unlimited data. the software was free from sprint on their website. gets fair speed. i have played online games with it, though not as fast as the cable modem. but great for surfing the net.

How do you do it W/ Blackberry? I haven't figured it out yet.
Yes.
My phone is an AT&T BB Bold 9000
115Kbps data rate (I haven't tweaked, etc.)
I'm sure you will need a data / tethering plan for this to work or possibly incur charges.
