Rye seed - ?? Will deer eat it ?

Thinking about throwing a bunch of RYE down in some spots I have in EARLY SEPT.

Do deer eat this stuff ? I have heard people say they do, but really ?

I can get a huge bag of it extremely cheap. 80 pounds.....

Then just sling the crapo out of it and see if it come up...

I don't think they eat the seeds but they definitely eat the grass.

If it is grain rye the deer love it when it comes up. They also love triticale it is a little hard to fine I think these days.

We find more deer on rye in dec. than on oats.

My experience with rye was so so. I had deer tear it up until it got to about 6-8" in height. At this point they moved to the wheat next to it. All I came up with is that the rye got slightly bitter once it began to mature. Not sure though....any opinions??

I can second that. They tear it up when its young and tender and lay off it when it begins to harden off.

There is cereal rye ,which is a harvestable grain and there is rye grass. Both will grow well thru the winter and spring and deer will love either. Good source of protein during cool seasons. We mix it with oats and or triticale for cattle and wildlife food plots.

Deer may not eat the seed, but turkeys and other birds will gobble it up. (no pun inten....OK, pun intended) If you have many turkeys or other birds, you might have trouble getting enough to lay there long enough to sprout. We could never get wheat or other food plots up at my BIL's place near Shamrock due to all the dang turkeys. Hate 'em.
