Has any body gotten MLDP permits before.

I am looking to get the property I am hunting set up on MLDP level 1. I am wondering if anybody on here has done this? If so how difficult is it and was it worth it? I am only actually gonna try to take care of the 100 acres that is my grandmothers and not the full 400 that is in the family, because of the hasel of getting a hold of one of the family members that lives outta state and we have no contact infor for him. I have 100's of pictures from my cam of doe's and absolutely none of bucks, the bucks may just not be crusing the area yet. I do have a couple pictures of doe's with fawns so I know there has got to be a buck or two in the area. If nothing else meeting with the biologist out at the property may help me improve it enough to allow me to draw more bucks onto the property. The biologist I talked to said that the only people he has turned down have been on extremely small properties so I may get lucky. My plan is to take only mature older doe's and to leave the breeders alone.

There's a few steps to go thru before you qualify for MLD Level 1......

    Level 1 MLDP Requirements:

The approved WMP must include current deer population data.

Once MLDPs have been issued, all antlerless deer harvested must be tagged with only a Level 1 MLDP, including deer taken during an archery-only season, muzzleloader-only season, or special youth-only season (no MLDP is required for deer taken on the property under the authority of an Antlerless and Spike Deer Control Permit).

If there are doe-days in the county, MLDPs must be used during doe-days on properties where they have been issued.

Level 1 MLDP cooperators are required to conduct sound deer population management through the harvest of an appropriate number of antlerless deer, and report the number of bucks and does harvested while enrolled in the MLDP program.

            Peyton,

I was advised not to use our MLPD permits during archery only and use them for general season

Now I could be wrong, but I think that is incorrect. I think once a place is on MLD, you can ONLY use your MLD permits, no matter what part of the season it is. We have been on Level III for a while now, so I'm not positive on the rules for Levels I and II. We actually started on Level III.

once you are on MLD permits you have to use them regardless, your personal tags are useless (voided) for that property. dont get caught using personal tags on a MLD property, it may hurt for awhile.

If it's an MLD property there's really no need to refer to it as "archery only" season is it?

My place is on MLD level 2 and going on level 3 this year. It is not that difficult. In a nutshell you have to show you are actively managing the habitat through various practices (habitat control, erosion control, predator control, census counts, supplemental water/food/shelters. You will have to write a WMP (wildlife management plan) stating your objectives for the land. Work with your biologist and get his/her input or join the local WMA (wildlife management association). If you are just looking to harvest alot of does for a year or two you could go the ADCP (anterless deer control permit) route. But that costs $360/year and it still has to be approved by your biologist. Once you are on the MLD program you must use MLD tags and not the ones on your license. Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

i may be wrong, but i think your going to need more acreage than that.

I'd add that a lot of hunter are doing the WMP type improvements to their properties by doing food plots, brush clearing, water sources, rotating livestock, doing stand counts and setting their own harvest goals and haven't take advantage of the program.

Get on TPWD and find out who your Wildlife biologist is, set up an appoint to meet them at your property and start implementing their recommendation.

It's a great program that you've already paid for so you might as well take advantage of it.
