You might remember, last year I was fortunate enough to go axis hunting in Junction. So about a month ago Richard (RRFishnHunt) gave us a ring and invited us back. The answer was YES in a heartbeat. We left Richard’s house around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. I was mentally preparing myself with some hunting videos.

We reached Old Segovia road around 7:30 p.m.

After shooting a few pics of axis (Dad will post these photos), Richard said we could probably squeeze in a short sit…it payed off completely. We saw a monster 10 point that probably would score in the 130’s. (Sorry no pics of him - he was too allusive). That night I was too excited and only got 3 hours of sleep.
Friday a.m. = I sat in a tree stand overlooking a feeder and a fence line. Mr. Steve corned around the feeder and such. Within 5 minutes after he left I had probably 20 whitetail bucks, spikes, and does all around me. I also had an axis spike that was in velvet (Not a shooter…. Yet). The 130 buck also came in at 15 YARDS!
Friday p.m. = I sat in the same tree stand as I did in the morning. Not as many deer but still plenty. The axis spike came in 5 yards away while I was texting so I spooked him. Towards the end of the hunt a porcupine came in, who I named Peter (Everyone needs a friend in the stand). I made a song for him (Peter the porcupine, porcupine, porcupine)
Saturday a.m. = I moved to a tripod at a place they call the 1st hill. As soon as I get settled in a jack rabbit comes in at 12 yards. I nailed him, a perfect double lung shot.
This was a tough sucker though, he ran 40 yards after the shot.

Danny Oliver joined us this time and he shot a really nice axis buck. So we go to track, and minimal blood trail. We never could find his axis
, but we think he just grazed it.
We had to fill the feeders, but hey someone has to do the dirty work.

After filling feeders we decided to do a little fishing and shoot turtles with the pellet gun.

Saturday p.m. = Me and my dad cheated and broke out the smoke pole. We went to an oat patch where all we saw was a 4 point, some does, and a family of raccoons.
Sunday a.m. = We used the .270 again, and not much luck. We did see the 130 again and a couple young bucks and does. At about 8 a.m. Richard texted us saying he had axis coming his way. So we got to texting each other until he decided the bucks were too young to shoot.
All in all I had a blast, and got my first “bowhunt bowkill”. I hope we can go back to Rock Pile Ranch soon - it’s a ton of fun.
