    feeder question

I have a protein feeder set out and went to move it to a new pen this morning. I got out there and somehow the rain got in where the feed is and it was all mildewed and rotting in the barrel. We emptied it out and I wiped the big chunks out of it let the lid off to air out, because it stunk to high heaven. What do I need to do to it before I put more protein in it??? Do I need to wash it out with water or just let it air out??? What is next?

So do I wash it out or just let it air out this week and fill it next weekend, like I planned? Will the smell keep the deer away from eating it?

The moister in the feed (protien or corn) can cause it to mildew and rot if it is not ventalated. Presuming you have a 55 gal feeder, you may need to perforate the barrel lid top and bottom and add a feeder cover lid to the top as the gavlanized one in this pick to the left bottom. Or just leave the barrle top off and add the galvanized barrle cover top. Don't lock them tight with the rubber seal in the lid as that will seal in the moister as well as seal it out. Then sitting out in the sun/heat,...... well you got the idea

BTW, the lockring lid needs to be perferated in the pick above

Sorry I forgot to mention I figured out the leak and will have it fixed before I put the feed back in the feeder. So now do I wash it out or just let it air out, then put the protein back in the feeder.

Haul the thing to the car wash and blast it clean. The funk you be gone by the time it dries. Yes, I had a corn feeder do the same thing to me.

I agree wash it wash it wash it. If the corn smells the deer may stay away til the other food sources dry up.
