    Elk hunting boot recommendation

I need to purchase a new pair of hunting/hiking boots for my late Sept elk hunt. We will be hunting the San Juan NF in SW CO and we will be doing lots of walking. So for those of you DIY elk hunters what boots do you suggest for this terrain and time of year? I have been thinking about a good pair of gortex lined unisulated hiking boots paired up with some high quality wool socks. Or should I go with lightly insulated 400-600gr thinsulate?

I am leaving monday for trek and we will be hiking in the San Juan NF. I can give you a scouting report on what we see.

I've used these boots on all my elk hunts and have been very happy. I like a lightweight boot and these fit the bill for me....

I'm sure there are better ones, but for the $'s these are hard to beat IMO

I wear a pair of Mindel boots. They are great boots and have great ankle support. These boots have been throught the mtns in Canada and the feet never had any problems. With the rubber coming up higher on the sides you do not need to worry about to sole coming seperated from the boot. I have had them for some time and they have stood the test of time. They were super comfortable from day one. I just wear socks to fill the tempature as i do not like to have to much insulation on the boot itself.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...set=ISO-8859-1

I would stick with the 200 gr. and take some good socks. I have worn my Lowa Hunter GTX Extreme boots on some very cold hunts and have not even had to wear more than a pair of gym socks. And you know how warm it can get here in NM in the fall. I was on a deer hunt and it got near 90 degrees and my feet did not even sweat in the lowas.
Get you a pair of lowa's and be done with it. IMO the pronghorns just do not hold up in the rocks very well.

Where abouts are you hiking? A scouting report would be awesome

Foretunately I know a bunch of locals and we will be in contact with the local sheep herders trying to locate the elk before we leave.

I have those boots (or really close to them) and yes they are light weight and comfy but they are terribly noisy, im not sure what it is about them.

I am not sure where in the San Juan NF but Barry (Bear) is taking a group of us and he would know where at.

I second the Danner Pronghorns. I have been using them for about 4 years. I have 2 pairs of the noninsulated ones. I pack into the back country of Colorado for an elk hunt out of the backpack and these have never let me down. I have noticed that if I am stalking (walking) my feet never get cold with these boots and a pair of poly socks with a pair of smart wool over them. If there is a lot of snow, I may use 2 pairs of socks. Personally my feet only get cold when I am sitting on a stand (Never in Colorado).

Last I saw, they were about $175.

i just recieved my rocky prowlers in the mail today. they are unisulated 8'' tall gortex, and are 3 lbs a pair. i like them alot, but i orderd one size to small. i got them off of ebay for 39.99. i think that there are still some listed. awsome boots would pay 120.00 for them if i had not found the better deal.
