    A Little OT: Kayak Questions

I have noticed over the last few months that there has been a nummber of Kayaks advertised in the classifieds so I figure some of you may know a little about Kayaks.

I am thinking about buying a couple but dont have a clue about them. I would want to fish but I also have small childern so I think I would need at least one two person boat. A couple of questions if I may:

    1) How much does a standard 2 person kayak weigh?
    2) Sit on top or sit inside what is safer and more comfortable, pros and cons?
    3) How much can you load on a mid size Kayak?
    5) Is there enough storage for a day trip?
    6) I need a real stable kayak not a racer so is the a make or style that can handle a little rough water?
    7) I dont mind spending the coin so what is a good brand or type?

I know lots of questions so if you have any advice please post up.

Go to www.texaskayakfisherman.com great site and they are more then willing to help out.

a two person is going to be atleast 70 pounds
i would go with a sit on top...easier to get in and out of
when bying look at at the load cap....they will be around 600 pounds for a 2 seater
there should be plenty of storage for a day trip
both ocean kayak and wilderness system make a great tandem...thats were i would start.

    hope that helps a little

I could write a book just answering those questions. Bottom line is try them out before you buy them. Then buy the one that feels right to you. (kind of sounds like buying a bow doesn't it) Go by that Fishing Tackle Unlimited in Houston when they have kayak demo days.

www.texaskayakfisherman.com is a great resource for all things kayak.

Just understand that once you have the yak...the buying (and the fun) has just begun!

As far as a two peron boat I would stay away from it as they dont do well with one person in them. If you are looking for a boat to paddle your kid around in look at a Cobra Fish-n-Dive. Buy a xtra seat and put it on the front facing backwards. I have a 70# 6 year old that sits up front and trolls while I paddle. Ive taken him beyond the breakers like this. My family has 4 boats and we take them everywhere. Got TKF and look at the forum there. If you want pictures of how my boat is set up to handle my kids Ill look for them. If you are ever in the Austin area yall are welcome to come paddle my boats.

Short for hard core rapids and surf (10ft) and long (12ft +) for everything else.

I have a couple of yaks and shopping around for a long, single person model for extended bay trips. The next will have inside storage for the life jacket and other items necessary for over night trips.

If you go to the texaskayakfisherman page, look in the articles section for some good stuff.
