First, thanks for all the help I have gotten from folks on TBH. Truck problems, plumbing problems, electrical problems, and I almost forgot job problems.
This morning I tried to pass it forward.
I had a couple of minutes to kill between a breakfast meeting and leaving for a lunch appointment, and in the shopping center was a Best Buys. I decided to take a look inside, and then find out what a small MP3 player would cost.
There were a bunch of Cali-looking sales guys, and one tall young man with a crew cut. I asked him where they were, and that I wanted to attach it to my hunting cap or boonie hat, to listen to music when I'm shooting- or hunting.
The young man (Joe) breaks a big smile, and says "There are actually hunters in California?". Turns out he's from South Texas, his Dad was relocated to the area recently with his job, and he's going to start attending the local junior college in the fall. Joe goes on to tell me about their lease near the King Ranch, hunting and taking an 8x8 with his .270, and asking "where is there a Bass Pro or Cabelas around here?". (Manteca and Reno, NV)
I gave him my contact info, plus the local archery club's web site where I teach some of the beginner archery classes, and told him if he gets in touch with me, I'll give him lessons with our club recurves, introduce him to the owner of the local archery shop for his own bow, and take him out for pigs and deer. You should have seen the kid's face- it was his 1st day on the job and I was his 1st "customer" it turned out.
I was thinking about all of you folks in Texas, figured the least I could do was get this young man into bowhunting, and keep him hunting on his stint in Cali. I hope he gets in touch with me.
Pass it forward.
