    Summer time tips for A/C

With the temps getting high out side please remember the few things

Wash your out side condenser out at least once a month and disconnect the power first before washing.

change your filter every two weeks if you have kids at home and there in and out all day, if not change it once a month.

If you have low air flow and it does not feel like it is cooling like it should, check your evap. coil to make sure its clean and your coils are not covered with a dirt blanket.

That's exactly what i do! Good tips. I'm trying to baby a 26 year old unit. The compressor unit is made by GE. I don't think GE even makes compressor units anymore. Another tip is not to try and run it at such a low temp when it is 100+ outside.

Yes. MAKE SURE THE POWER IS DISCONNECTED. If possible, wash the outside coil from the inside out. If you have a family schedule that is for the most part "routine", programmable stats will help save on your energy bills.

      Good post

Yes and try to block as much sun light from the windows as possible.

I agree. We have the dark UV screens on our west side to help block direct afternoon and evening sun. It seems to make a difference to me.

Ooops! I always have just sprayed that sucker down. I haven't ever turned off the power. Seems like an A/C guy told me you didn't have to turn it off a long time ago.

              Thanks for the heads up.

should always kill power, if you have a bare wire that you can not see you might spray it while washing it out. Many people are killed this way every year.

Any more tips. I'm scared to see what my next bill will be.

Wait until Congress passes the Cap and Trade bill!

Yes if you can vent your attic or even better add the heat barrier or attic fans that work on a t-stat or vented gable.

If you think for some reason your unit is low on freon check the larger of the two copper lines that run to your unit, it should have sweat on the line by where it enters the unit.

you should also treat your drain lines, about 1/2 a cup of bleach in your drain pan once a month to kill cold water algae.

Any tips for window units besides keeping the filter clean?

We dont have central air since we moved a few years ago, but the two big 220v units keep the house pretty cool. (but the cost a LOT!)

On the window units make sure you keep the coils clean, if the evap. coil look like dirt has gotten past filter. remove unit from the window and the outer case and buy some coil cleaner and clean both coils. remember not to get water in the controls and the motor.

I can't remember the last time the evaporator coil was cleaned on mine. The unit is in the attic and I can't get motivated to crawl in that hot attic to clean it. How do you go about cleaning one.........compressed air???
