I have an old 30-30 that I use around camp for varmints and hogs. But it gets a lot of abuse and is rusting, anyone every tried putting Ospho or a similar rust preventing coating on their guns? Ospho when I worked offshore would keep the piping from rusting for years even if we didn't paint over it, it drys clear although it makes the metal look like its wet. But I don't know how it would do with bluing on the guns. Any thoughts?

WD-40. Don't take my word for it, read the article on the Brownells web site comparing rust preventative chemicals. WD stands for water displacement. I'd spray it and clean up surface rust with very fine steel wool, and then spray it again for storage.

My duck hunting partner is retired Navy Gunners Mate, and used to maintain the small arms for a Navy SEAL Team. That's what he used, and uses on his shotguns and firearms today. When he's done cleaning it he sprays it down wet with WD-40, then blows off the excess with compressed air, puts a drop (tiny amount) of gun oil where the bolt rides in the receiver, and that's it. He said the biggest problem with SEAL teams was they'd insist on lubbing their guns when they got them, which would get grit in the action and then have problems. When they did what he said, "fire it almost dry", the guns shot perfectly.
