Sharp Shooters Suggested for Deer Problem

What!!??? Call me, I would be glad to come and "help" control your WT population.

SHAWNEE, Kan. –A proposal by park officials in Johnson County suggests using trained law enforcement officers and park police to hunt deer at Shawnee Mission Park.

The Johnson County Parks Department released the recommendation Wednesday for how to control the growing White Tail deer population.

They say they don't have a lot of choices because Kansas does not allow non lethal methods. But the shooting won't be open to just anyone.

"We would equip park police and participating law enforcement officers from other communities that would want to participate,” said Johnson County Parks Department Director Michael Meadors. “We would train them extensively and then close the park down for those initial harvests.”

They believe sharp shooters and archers are the best option to thin the herds.

The issue has drawn heated criticism from both sides of the debate and will be discussed next Wednesday at the Johnson County Parks and Recreation board meeting.

I've never understood this...they want to spend money to help control deer populations whereas if they were to open it to hunters, they would actually make money on license sales, local purchases, etc...
