    Winch up feeder questions ????

I want to build a winch up feeder.

What would be best for the legs? drill stem pipe or square tubing?

    I'm thinking 12' legs over 2' stubs.

    ideas / suggestions.

    thanx,

    David

Drill stem would be awfully heavy and larger diameter than you should need. I have 1 5/8" heavy gauge pipe legs on mine.

I bought this header and got my legs at a scrap dealer that also sold some pipe.

        Randy,

I may go that route. I'll call around tomorrow for pipe in that size.

        thanx,

I used 2" sch 80 stubs 8" long with 1"1/2 sch 40 legs 14' long, it is a snug fit with very little slack. I think 2' stubs will be near impossible to remove once the feeder has been out in the weather. I really have to work to get the legs out of the stubs on my feeder and I grease them every year.

I agree on the drill stem being too heavy. I would go with the 1 5/8 sch40 or ss20 legs. They are plenty stout. We have 2 on our lease that way.

I have this winch up..... I like the design, it makes the legs even farther from the barrel to make sure the coons do not get on it.......

12 foot legs is too short David. The bucket doesn't get all the way to the plate and pulley on the top. Figure bucket and feeder about 5 foot. Slant on the legs. That put the bottom of your feeder about eye level. I like mine above my head to keep livestock out and get a better broadcast on the corn. The best hint I can give you is buy good hardware. Build a hangman feeder.

                  David,

Look in the DIY section I posted up a build along of a winch up feeder. The legs are 1" pipe that slide into 1 1/4" pipe. My leg sections are 7' and 6' long the top piece slides into the tripod only a foot and second section of the legs slide in 1.5'. You can stand this thing up with one person, and the guy standing under the feeder in one of the last pics is 6'4".

I used 85 gallon barrels and 14' square tubing legs.

Don't skimp on the winch. Get a Dutton or equivalent.

My dad made mine out of drill stem pipe, it is a beast to move and take down and put back up. One thing is for sure though, I've never had to stake it down or worry about hogs knocking it over.
